Day-by-Day Itinerary

Every detail planned — accommodation, meals, and darshan timings

Arrive at Delhi or Haridwar and transfer directly to your hotel. The evening brings your first sacred moment — the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri ghat, where thousands of lamps float on the river in a spectacle of flame and devotion. An orientation briefing from your tour guide prepares you for the journey ahead.

Key Activities

  • Hotel check-in and luggage settling
  • Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri
  • Tour orientation briefing

Overnight

Hotel in Haridwar

A scenic 8-hour mountain drive takes you through the cool green slopes of the Mussoorie hills and into the Yamuna valley. Barkot is the base camp for the Yamunotri dham — arrive, settle in, and rest well before tomorrow's temple trek.

Key Activities

  • Scenic mountain drive via Mussoorie
  • Janki Chatti viewpoint stop
  • River crossing and valley views

Overnight

Guesthouse in Barkot

The first of the four great darshans. Trek 6 km (or take a pony) to reach the Yamunotri temple, the source of the sacred Yamuna river. Pilgrims cook rice in the Surya Kund hot spring as an offering — a ritual unique to this shrine. Return to Barkot by evening.

Key Activities

  • Yamunotri temple darshan
  • Surya Kund hot spring ritual
  • Divya Shila puja

Overnight

Barkot

A shorter drive today — roughly 4 hours — brings you to Uttarkashi, a mountain town on the banks of the Bhagirathi. It is the staging point for Gangotri and home to the revered Vishwanath Temple, an ancient Shiva shrine. The evening offers quiet time for riverside meditation.

Key Activities

  • Vishwanath Temple visit
  • Uttarkashi local market
  • Bhagirathi riverside meditation

Overnight

Hotel in Uttarkashi

Drive 100 km up to Gangotri at 3,048 m elevation, the mythological origin point of the Ganga. Temple darshan, followed by a ritual bath in the glacial Bhagirathi — cold, clear, and deeply purifying. Return to Uttarkashi by evening.

Key Activities

  • Gangotri temple darshan
  • Sacred bath at Bhagirathi ghat
  • Pandava Gufa exploration

Overnight

Uttarkashi

The longest driving day of the yatra — 9 scenic hours through the Tehri Dam reservoir valley and down into the Mandakini valley. Guptkashi, the base for Kedarnath, is a pilgrimage town in its own right. Rest and prepare mentally for the high-altitude trek ahead.

Key Activities

  • Tehri Dam reservoir viewpoint
  • Ardhanarishvara Temple in Guptkashi
  • Rest and acclimatisation

Overnight

Guptkashi

The spiritual heart of the yatra. Early drive to Sonprayag, then Gaurikund, before the 8 km ascent to Kedarnath at 3,583 m. The Jyotirlinga temple — one of the twelve holiest Shiva shrines — stands against a backdrop of snow and bare rock unlike anywhere else on earth. Overnight near the temple for early morning darshan before descending.

Key Activities

  • Kedarnath temple darshan
  • Evening aarti at the Jyotirlinga
  • Bhairavnath Temple visit

Overnight

Kedarnath / Lincholi

Descend from Kedarnath and drive north along the Alaknanda valley to Joshimath — where Adi Shankaracharya established a monastery and meditated. Continue to Badrinath in the Chamoli district, with a stop to see the Vishnuprayag confluence where two rivers merge with a roar.

Key Activities

  • Joshimath Shankaracharya Math
  • Vishnuprayag river confluence
  • Arrival darshan if time permits

Overnight

Badrinath

A full, unhurried day at the fourth and final dham. Morning darshan at the Badrivishal temple, where the idol of Badrinarayan is draped in fresh flowers and hymns fill the cold mountain air. Afternoon: walk 3 km to Mana village — the last inhabited Indian settlement before the Tibetan border — and see Vyas Gufa (where the Mahabharata was dictated), Bhim Pul (a natural rock bridge), and the Saraswati river.

Key Activities

  • Badrinath morning darshan
  • Tapt Kund sacred bath
  • Mana village, Vyas Gufa, Bhim Pul
  • Saraswati river viewpoint

Overnight

Badrinath

Begin the return journey south. The highlight is Devprayag — where the turquoise Alaknanda and the grey-green Bhagirathi meet to form the Ganga proper. Standing at the sangam is one of the most visually striking moments of the whole yatra. Raghunath Temple and riverside photography round out the afternoon.

Key Activities

  • Devprayag Alaknanda-Bhagirathi sangam
  • Raghunath Temple
  • Riverside photography

Overnight

Rudraprayag

Drive down to Rishikesh — the yoga capital of the world — for a final evening on the Ganga. Walk across the suspended Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula bridges, watch the light play on the river, and attend the Triveni Ghat aarti as the sun sets. An optional yoga session is available for those who wish to close the yatra with practice.

Altitude & Health Safety

Kedarnath sits at 3,583 m. Preparation and awareness protect your pilgrimage.

Acclimatise Gradually

Spend at least one night in Haridwar or Rishikesh before ascending. Rest on arrival days and avoid strenuous activity. The itinerary is structured to allow natural acclimatisation at each elevation.

Stay Hydrated

Drink 3–4 litres of water daily at altitude. Avoid alcohol throughout the journey. Carry electrolyte sachets — dehydration accelerates altitude sickness symptoms significantly.

Know the Symptoms

Persistent headache, nausea, and dizziness signal altitude sickness. If symptoms worsen rather than improving with rest, descend immediately. Never dismiss or push through severe symptoms.

Fitness Requirements

Minimum fitness: able to walk 6–8 km on uneven terrain. The Kedarnath trek is 16 km round-trip on steep mountain paths. Consult your physician if you have cardiac, respiratory, or joint conditions.

Common Questions

The Char Dham temples open in late April or May (on an auspicious date announced each year by the temple committees) and close around October or November for winter. The best travel window is May–June and September–October. July–August brings heavy monsoon rains and landslide risk — travel is possible but significantly less comfortable and predictable.
Yes. The Kedarnath trek is 16 km (8 km each way) on steep mountain terrain at over 3,500 m altitude. Yamunotri also requires a 6 km trek or pony ride. We recommend starting regular walking and light cardio exercise 4–6 weeks before departure. Passengers above 60 years of age or with cardiac, respiratory, or joint conditions should consult their physician before booking.
Absolutely. Solo bookings are welcome with a single supplement charge (listed in the pricing section). We can also pair you with other solo pilgrims in a shared group departure to reduce the supplement cost — many solo travellers prefer this, as the bonds formed on this journey are often lasting.
Warm layers (Kedarnath can drop below 0°C even in summer nights), a waterproof jacket, sturdy trekking shoes with ankle support, thermal innerwear, sunscreen (UV intensity is extreme at altitude), personal medication, original Aadhaar card or Passport, and 2–3 changes of comfortable clothing. A full detailed packing list is sent to all confirmed bookings.
Yes. The Uttarakhand government requires all pilgrims to complete biometric registration before undertaking the yatra. We handle this process on your behalf as part of the package — just ensure you carry your original Aadhaar card. Online registration typically opens in early April each year; slots are limited, particularly for the peak season.
Helicopters operate subject to weather clearance from the Civil Aviation authority and local conditions. Flights are frequently cancelled in fog, rain, or storms — even in otherwise fine weather, mountain microclimates are unpredictable. We strongly advise booking a buffer day at Kedarnath and not relying solely on the helicopter for your descent. Refunds for cancelled flights are issued by the helicopter operator per their own policy (not Corbett Tourism's).
